Hillcrest's only queer, women-owned specialty coffee and zero-proof drink bar, Mnemonic Coffee has operated from 2604 Fifth Ave since its July 2023 opening. The queer and women-owned designation makes Mnemonic one of Hillcrest's few LGBTQ+-identified specialty coffee bars, a community-rooted identity shared with the veteran-owned and women-owned James Coffee Co. roastery on the same corridor. The shop rotates beans from roasters across the country, including Necessity Coffee in Encinitas and Brandywine Coffee Roasters in Delaware, pulling each on a La Marzocco Linea Classic espresso machine. A dine-in-first sustainability model adds an up-charge on single-use cups, with proceeds donated to offset the environmental footprint of disposable packaging. The July 2023 opening brought Hillcrest's first dedicated zero-proof cocktail program to Fifth Ave, adding a non-alcoholic nightlife option to a corridor where Cork & Stem anchors the wine-bar end of the craft beverage spectrum. The signature seasonal zero-proof cocktail menu represents the bar's most complex offering, blending espresso technique with mixology-style layering and housemade syrups.
