The bar shares the historic Fifth Avenue gay bar corridor with The Brass Rail, which has operated nearby since the 1960s. A back patio hosts weekly karaoke, drag shows, and dance events, expanding the venue's footprint beyond its intimate indoor bar. The bar has anchored the LGBTQ+ community on Fifth Ave since 1981, running karaoke, trivia, and themed nights that share the neighborhood's nightlife strip with the Latinx-owned California-Mediterranean kitchen at insideOUT on University Ave. In 1983, community organizers gathered on the bar's patio to establish the AIDS Foundation of San Diego, making the venue a documented starting point for the city's first grassroots HIV/AIDS service organization.
