About

Hillcrest's longest-running Chinese kitchen, Hong Kong Restaurant at 3871 Fourth Ave has served Cantonese and Szechuan dishes continuously since 1980 as an LGBTQ+-owned establishment. The LGBTQ+-owned kitchen has maintained its wok program through four decades of Hillcrest's evolution, occupying the same Fourth Ave corridor as Number One Fifth Avenue's 1981-era LGBTQ+ bar one block east. The menu spans more than 100 items, covering wok-fired standards like kung pao chicken and moo goo gai pan alongside clay pot specialties and Cantonese-style seafood platters. Diners splitting a late evening between cuisines sometimes pair Hong Kong's stir-fries with a pie from Arrivederci Ristorante farther up Fourth Ave. The most complex orders are the multi-course Cantonese spreads, which require the kitchen to time clay pot, wok, and steamer preparations simultaneously for table-side delivery to large parties.
