Marston House

Art Gallery & Museums

About

Designed by Irving Gill and William Hebbard in 1905 for civic leader George Marston, Marston House anchors the northwest corner of Balboa Park as a flagship example of American Arts & Crafts residential architecture. Docent-led tours move through period rooms furnished with Stickley, Roycroft, and Limbert pieces, building a craftsman-era timeline that pairs with the eclectic Americana holdings at J. A. Cooley Museum. The five-acre grounds include a formal English garden, carriage house, and original eucalyptus plantings traceable to Marston's role in commissioning the Olmsted brothers' park plans. Save Our Heritage Organisation operates the property under a long-term lease with the City of San Diego and stewards a collection of Gustav Stickley furniture and California plein-air paintings. The garden corridor connects visitors to other curated outdoor sites in the area like Harper's Topiary Garden, building a walkable Hillcrest itinerary around early-twentieth-century landscape design. Specialty programming includes the annual Christmas at Marston House candlelight tour and academic symposia on Arts & Crafts decorative arts.
