Encinitas 101 MainStreet Association, a 501(c)(6) nonprofit originally formed in 1982 as the Downtown Encinitas Merchants' Association, preserves and promotes the culture, character, and commerce of downtown Encinitas from 818 South Coast Highway 101. The organization adopted the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Main Street Revitalization Program in 1988, implementing its four-point framework of Design, Organization, Promotion, and Economic Vitality to build a destination district where the D Street Viewpoint draws visitors to the blufftop promenade overlooking Moonlight Beach. In 2004, the national Main Street Center recognized the association with its highest honor, the Great American Main Street Award, validating 16 years of corridor revitalization along Coast Highway 101. Annual events including the Fall Festival, Holiday Parade, and Wavecrest Woodie Meet activate the downtown streetscape for thousands of visitors, generating foot traffic for corridor businesses including Biergarden Encinitas in Leucadia. The association's executive director and staff report to a volunteer board of directors managing streetscape design consultations, business-recruitment campaigns, and an annual promotion calendar aligned with the national Main Street network spanning more than 1,200 cities across 40 states.
