About

D Street Viewpoint in Encinitas's Old Encinitas corridor sits at the western terminus of D Street, where a timber-and-concrete staircase — originally built in 1989 and structurally repaired by the City in January 2026 — descends the coastal bluff to a mile-long beach stretching south to Swami's Point. The staircase empties onto one of Encinitas's most consistent reef breaks, the same lineup where Progressive Surf Academy runs instructional sessions throughout the summer season. Benches and a small terrace at the bluff edge face due west at roughly 80 feet above the tideline, framing an unobstructed view of Moonlight Beach to the north. An outdoor rinse shower at the base of the stairs allows surfers and beachgoers to clean off before climbing back to street level. The viewpoint doubles as the primary spectator perch for the annual Switchfoot Bro-Am surf and music festival, drawing crowds to a stretch of coast also served by Encinitas Surfboards a few blocks inland on the 101. The staircase structure itself comprises multiple timber stair towers joined by concrete walkways descending the bluff face, a configuration the City of Encinitas classifies as the most structurally complex beach-access point in its coastal infrastructure system.
