Encinitas Historical Society and 1883 Schoolhouse

Cultural Centers

About

The Encinitas Historical Society operates out of the 1883 Schoolhouse at 390 West F Street in Old Encinitas, the oldest standing structure in the city. The society's rotating exhibits, archival photograph collection, and oral-history recordings document Encinitas from its founding as a 22-person settlement through the present day, joining ICA San Diego / North as a cultural anchor along the Coast Highway 101 corridor. The original one-room schoolhouse was built from redwood in 1883 for $600 to serve all eight of the town's school-age children from kindergarten through eighth grade. After the building was relocated in 1928 and converted to a private residence, the newly formed Historical Society rescued it from demolition in 1983 and restored it to its original site, reopening it to the public in 1995. Guided downtown walking tours depart the third Saturday of each month from September through July, covering landmarks along F Street and the 101 in proximity to the Self-Realization Fellowship Meditation Gardens and the Third Street boat houses. The restored interior retains its original hardwood floors and hand-forged nails, housing research files of photographs, maps, oral-history transcripts, and the Ida Lou Coley papers spanning Encinitas's founding-era documentation.
