ICA San Diego / North in Encinitas occupies a chaparral-covered hilltop above San Elijo Lagoon on South El Camino Real, serving as the North County campus of the Institute of Contemporary Art, San Diego. Originally established as the Lux Art Institute before merging with the San Diego Art Institute, the venue operates a resident-artist program where internationally recognized creators produce work on-site during their exhibitions, a studio-meets-gallery model distinct from the traditional display format at Nadine Baurin Fine Art on the 101. Admission to all exhibitions and public engagement programs is complimentary, funded through memberships, donations, and a suggested $10 general contribution. The campus integrates native-plant gardens and outdoor sculpture installations into a museum-without-walls experience that extends beyond the indoor galleries. Workshops for children, teens, and adults cover media ranging from ceramics and batik to mini-comics and experimental printmaking, programming that aligns with the maker-space ethos at Flowering Cactus Creatives in the Encinitas creative corridor.
