About

Guggenheim Theater in downtown San Diego's East Village occupies a 3,400-square-foot black box inside UC San Diego Park & Market at 1100 Market Street, a mixed-use civic hub that launched in May 2022. The 225-seat configurable room hosts Mainly Mozart, Camarada, San Diego Jazz Ventures, and San Diego Opera through an Intersections concert series, adding a chamber-scale performance option to the East Village corridor that also includes Quartyard's outdoor concert stage. A $1 million gift from La Jolla philanthropists David and Claire Guggenheim funded the theater's automated LED lighting grid and PTZ camera array, enabling live-streamed performances and video-conferencing events from the stage. Beyond the theater, the building houses Digital Gym Cinema's 58-seat screening room for independent and foreign films, a Qualcomm Institute-engineered dual-sided video wall, and an outdoor amphitheater staging 200 to 400 attendees. That multi-format layout—black box, cinema, outdoor stage, gallery—concentrates four distinct performance configurations under one roof, a programming density that differs from the single-hall approach at Music Box downtown. The most technically layered productions combine the automated LED grid with PTZ live-streaming cameras and the Qualcomm video wall to simulcast performances from the black box to remote audiences while simultaneously hosting an in-person crowd of 225.
