About

WorldBeat Cultural Center in downtown San Diego occupies a repurposed one-million-gallon water tower near Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo, presenting multicultural arts programming on Park Boulevard since 1984. Resident instructors run ongoing classes in African drumming, Taiko, Egyptian dance, and Brazilian Samba capoeira inside the center, while San Diego Civic Dance Association stages complementary performance programming across the park grounds. The Children's Ethno-Botanical Garden on the property, developed in partnership with UC Santa Cruz's Life Laboratory and the Alliance Healthcare Foundation, teaches youth nutrition and environmental science through hands-on planting and a NOAA-linked weather station. Annual programming anchors the calendar around a Global Earth Day Festival, a multi-week Kwanzaa celebration, and rotating gallery exhibitions of African and Indigenous artifacts, making the center one of the park's year-round cultural venues alongside Casa del Prado Theatre. The center's largest-scale undertaking is a current campus expansion adding a new indoor performance stage, an outdoor amphitheater and plaza, and an expanded ethno-botanical garden to the existing facility.
