About

San Diego Civic Dance Association in downtown San Diego's Balboa Park district has supported the city's Parks & Recreation dance program since its founding in 1942, providing fundraising, scholarships, and production support from its headquarters at 2125 Park Boulevard near the San Diego Zoo. The organization underwrites recitals and showcases performed at Casa del Prado Theatre, where Civic Dance Arts stages its annual three-week Collage concert series each February and 13 recital performances across three June weekends. Civic Dance Arts currently enrolls approximately 3,000 students ages three through senior citizen across 22 city recreation centers and Balboa Park studios, offering instruction in tap, jazz, ballet, modern, hip hop, musical theater, creative movement, and Hawaiian dance. Four auditioned performing companies — ranging from youth to adult — represent the City of San Diego at community events including December Nights, the San Diego County Fair, and Parks After Dark programming. The association's scholarship program and the broader Balboa Park performing-arts ecosystem connect young dancers to pre-professional training pathways alongside organizations like San Diego Civic Youth Ballet. The most production-intensive event on the annual calendar is Collage, which commissions guest choreographers from New York, Los Angeles, and Texas to stage original works performed by company dancers across multiple sold-out shows at Casa del Prado.
