The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park

About

The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park in downtown San Diego's Marina District opened in August 2021 as the first permanent waterfront concert venue on the West Coast, designed by Tucker Sadler Architects with a performance shell from London-based Soundforms. The San Diego Symphony operates both this 10,000-capacity outdoor stage and the recently renovated Jacobs Music Center on B Street, splitting its 140-plus annual concerts between the two venues by season. A 13,000-square-foot stage rises 57 feet above the 3.7-acre park on the Embarcadero, its Fibonacci-sequence shell geometry engineered to project orchestral and amplified sound across tiered seating that flexes from 2,000 chairs for intimate sets to full-capacity general-admission lawn configurations. The Shell Provisions food program, developed by a Top Chef alumnus, rotates local restaurant pop-ups and a full concessions pavilion — a culinary draw that complements the dining and event infrastructure at the adjacent San Diego Convention Center. Jacobs Park remains free to the public on non-concert days, with renovated sport courts, a promenade, and unobstructed views of San Diego Bay and the Coronado Bridge. Private full-venue buyouts for up to 10,000 guests include turnkey production, backstage facilities with dressing rooms and showers, and an on-site music library, scaling from seated galas and corporate keynotes to multi-night festival residencies.
