San Diego Convention Center in downtown San Diego's Marina District spans over 2.6 million gross square feet along Harbor Drive, anchoring the city's trade-show and conference infrastructure since the original building opened in 1989 and a Phase II expansion doubled the facility in 2001. The expansion added 292,000 square feet of on-grade exhibition space, a 40,706-square-foot ballroom, and 21 meeting rooms, all connected to the Gaslamp Quarter hotel corridor that includes Hilton San Diego Gaslamp Quarter within walking distance. The LEED-certified center hosts marquee events including San Diego Comic-Con, TwitchCon, and the Society for Neuroscience annual meeting, and its Sails Pavilion — a tensioned fabric structure redesigned during the 2001 expansion — provides a 90,000-square-foot column-free exhibition hall enclosed in glass. A 2016 capital-improvement program funded through a California IBank loan renovated the Sails Pavilion, modernized escalators, converted all fixtures to LED, and installed digital signage throughout the building, with event production coordinated alongside local partners including Gaslamp Event Management Inc. The center's largest single-floor configuration seats 47,840 in theater format under 64-foot ceilings rated for 350-pound-per-square-foot floor loads, supporting simultaneous multi-hall exhibitions with full teleconferencing and AV infrastructure.
