Modern Times Coffee in downtown San Diego's East Village operates as The Invigatorium at Ninth Avenue and Market Street, a collaboration between San Diego brewery Modern Times Beer and hospitality group Consortium Holdings. The cafe roasts its own beans on a 15-kilo Giesen roaster at the company's production facility, joining East Village roaster Achilles Coffee Roasters @ Park 12 in the neighborhood's growing specialty-coffee cluster. Nitro cold brew, barrel-aged beans, and canned cold-brew bottles sit alongside craft beer taps, making this one of the few San Diego cafes that pours both specialty coffee and house-brewed IPAs from the same bar. The interior — Post-It-note dragon murals, a velociraptor behind the counter, a gold disco ball overhead — reflects the maximalist design language Consortium Holdings developed for projects like Born & Raised and Morning Glory. Vegan pastries supplied by Split Bakehouse fill the food case, pairing plant-based baked goods with the coffee menu in a format distinct from the full pub-kitchen setup at Ballast Point Brewing nearby. The roasting program's most complex output is a rotating series of barrel-aged coffee beans, fermented in bourbon and wine barrels before final roasting on the Giesen.
