About

Knotty Brewing Co. in downtown San Diego's East Village is a veteran- and women-owned craft brewery operating a five-barrel brewhouse at 842 Market Street, steps from Petco Park. Brew Master Donovan Lane, recruited from a small brewery outside Portland, Maine, runs the production side with a focus on British and European styles — British Pale Ale, Belgian Wit, ESB, British Stout, and a Munich-style Märzen — that deliberately counter the hop-forward orthodoxy dominating San Diego's craft scene, an old-world brewing philosophy shared by Mission Brewing in the same East Village corridor. The tasting room pours 10 beers on tap and holds what the brewery calls East Village's smallest patio bar, a deliberate intimacy that keeps the focus on the beer itself. Founded by Ken Lovi — in San Diego hospitality since 1995 — Knotty Brewing operates as the production arm of sister venue Knotty Barrel next door, with a viewing window letting Knotty Barrel diners watch Lane work the brewhouse between pours. Distribution runs through Karl Strauss Distributing, placing Knotty's British-style lineup alongside the broader independent-brewery portfolio that also stocks taps at Bay City Brewing Co Tasting Room downtown. Brewery tours, brew-master experience packages, and private tasting events round out the operation beyond the standard taproom pour.
