Studio 23, Southwestern Artists Association

Art Gallery & Museums

About

Studio 23 of the Southwestern Artists Association in downtown San Diego's Balboa Park has maintained a juried painters' collective inside Spanish Village Art Center since 1949, making SWAA the oldest and largest-membership guild in the Village. The roughly fifty member artists work across oil, acrylic, pastel, watercolor, and mixed media, rotating a Two-Artists Show and a smaller Alcove Show on the first and sixteenth of each month in a gallery that shares the Village's 1935 courtyard with craft guilds including the Art Glass Guild in Studio 25. Monthly first-Monday membership meetings conclude with a public art demonstration covering technique, media, and sales strategy, while the annual spring Top 100 juried show and One Foot Show draw entries from artists across San Diego County. The gift shop stocks handcrafted jewelry, glasswork, polymer clay, carved gourds, and miniature paintings produced by members, complementing the sculptural output of the neighboring San Diego Sculptors Guild on the same Village patio. The most ambitious annual event is the fall outdoor Art Festival & Sale, which fills the Spanish Village courtyard with original work from the full membership and invited plein air contestants.
