The Balboa in downtown San Diego's Bankers Hill district has built its menu around one-third-pound, never-frozen, all-natural beef patties since opening at 1863 Fifth Avenue in 2012, near Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo. The burger program hand-cuts Kennebec potato fries to order and finishes each patty with a proprietary house sauce, a single-concept kitchen discipline that parallels the ingredient-focused Italian menu at CUCINA urbana up the block on Fifth Avenue. A back room stocked with pinball machines, a pool table, and vintage arcade cabinets extends the bar's dive-lounge identity beyond the counter-service dining room. The cocktail program draws from golden-age recipes and pairs with the same Fifth Avenue Bankers Hill foot traffic that fills the griddle-top breakfast counter at Hob Nob Hill each morning. The most built-out order is the fully loaded Balboa Burger with bacon, egg, avocado, and garlic Kennebec fries.
