About

Kettner Exchange in downtown San Diego's Little Italy holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand designation maintained every year since 2019, serving progressive American cuisine from a two-level indoor-outdoor space on Kettner Boulevard. The rotating menu draws on global influences — Szechuan frog legs, spicy tuna crispy rice, bone marrow — plated with an Asian-inflected creativity that departs from the more traditional Italian preparations at Barbusa elsewhere in Little Italy. Recipient of an Orchid & Onion Award for architecture, the $3.6 million build-out features a 20-foot eucalyptus sculpture, floor-to-ceiling windows, and Little Italy's only rooftop patio with harbor views, swinging daybeds, and private cabanas. The head chef developed the program after positions at Le Cirque 2000 in New York, Nobu in Aspen, and Yellowtail at the Bellagio in Las Vegas — a fine-dining pedigree filtered through San Diego's coastal sourcing. The rooftop bar adds inventive cocktails alongside the shareable small-plate menu, a cocktail-and-bites format that pairs with the more wine-centric approach at Postino Little Italy on the neighborhood's south end. Full-restaurant buyouts accommodate private events across the rooftop, main dining floor, and cabana spaces with coursed tasting menus and dedicated cocktail service.
