About

Grab & Go Subs in downtown San Diego traces its recipes to 1973, when Sicilian-born founder Vincenzo “Mimmo” Gaglio brought a lifetime of baking experience from Montelepre, Sicily, through New York City to the San Diego sandwich counter at 109 West C Street. The Italian sub program layers salami, ham, capicola, and provolone with Italian dressing on fresh bread, a traditional Italian-American deli format that competes with the artisan sandwich builds at Mendocino Farms in the downtown lunch market. Hot pastrami and the house Sicilian sub anchor the specialty menu alongside turkey avocado Swiss and a breakfast program running egg sandwiches and burritos for the weekday office crowd. A second location on West Washington Street in Mission Hills extends the Gaglio family's reach beyond downtown, while the C Street kitchen serves the same courthouse-and-office lunch corridor as Carnivore Sandwich. The most labor-intensive builds run the full Italian combo — multiple cured meats sliced to order, layered with aged provolone and house-dressed — through peak weekday lunch volume under two-minute ticket times.
