About

Les Artistes Inn is a 12-room artist-themed boutique hotel at 944 Camino Del Mar, Del Mar, CA 92014, where every room is a one-of-a-kind creation hand-crafted by owner and architect Sulana Sae-Onge. A University of Pennsylvania graduate who studied under the legendary Louis Kahn, Sae-Onge designed each room to honor a specific artist or artistic style, from the art-deco Erte room to the western-themed Remington room with a mirror framed by a horse collar, to the Rivera room lined with miniature Mayan sculptures, to the O'Keeffe room with ornate tiles set into adobe partition walls. Many materials were salvaged and renovated, including granite countertops, wooden headboards, and a clawfoot bathtub, giving each space a story of its own. The inn has been open for over 20 years and offers ocean and garden views, free Wi-Fi, cable TV, microwaves, and air conditioning across all rooms. Check-in is at 4:00 PM and check-out at 11:00 AM. Stone walkways wind through lush courtyard gardens featuring fountains, an outdoor fireplace, and barbecue facilities, all reflecting Sae-Onge's Thai heritage and her philosophy that architecture comes alive through lighting and water. A sprawling floor engraving of Torrey pine trees and pelicans flying over an abstract beach stretches across the upstairs living area, hand-carved by Sae-Onge herself with a kitchen fork. The inn is pet-friendly and features a dog wash station for post-beach cleanup. Horseshoes donated by jockeys who stayed at the hotel while racing at the nearby track line the entrance to the Remington room, linking the property to Del Mar's deep equestrian roots. Guests describe the property as a hidden gem that captures old California charm without pretension, and repeat visitors have been returning for over 16 years. Cafe Secret, serving Peruvian cuisine, is a short walk away, as are Beeside Balcony Del Mar and several village restaurants along Camino Del Mar. Del Mar City Beach is a 15-minute walk downhill. Free parking is available on-site, and San Diego is a 26-minute drive or a quick Amtrak train ride from the nearby Solana Beach station. Art lovers exploring the village should also visit Gabrielle Benot Art Gallery, which shares the same creative spirit just a short distance north along Camino Del Mar.
