Camino Books: For The Road Ahead is an independent bookstore at 1555 Camino Del Mar in Del Mar 92014, situated on the street level of Del Mar Plaza. Owner John Evans founded the business in Northern California in 1989 under the name Diesel, A Bookstore, and the shop has been serving San Diego readers since 2019. In April 2025 the store relocated to its current 1,276-square-foot Del Mar Plaza space, complete with an outdoor area for author readings, book signings, and community events and a dedicated children's section inside. The staff curates a selection that spans literary fiction, thought-provoking nonfiction, children's titles, journals, cards, games, and what Evans calls hidden gems — books chosen for quality rather than quantity. Camino Books holds a perfect 5.0-star Google rating and participates in the annual San Diego Book Crawl and National Independent Bookstore Day. The store also offers book group programming, personalized recommendations, special orders, shipping, and streaming audiobooks through its website. After browsing the shelves, shoppers can grab fresh groceries or a prepared meal next door at Valley Farm Market Del Mar, which opened on the same plaza level in January 2026. Hours run Monday and Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
