About

Mathewson Park in Coronado occupies 1.1 acres at the triangle where Pomona Avenue meets Adella Avenue, roughly eight blocks east of Orange Avenue in a residential stretch of the 92118 ZIP. Originally called Pomona Park before its 1954 renaming, the grounds sit within walking distance of the Coronado Public Library, giving families a paired destination for weekday outings in the Village interior. A full rebuild completed in 2021 replaced the aging play structure with a universally accessible playground — Coronado's first — featuring ADA-compliant rubber surfacing, an elevated sand table, and wheelchair-accessible picnic seating. The 75-person-capacity lawn hosts pickup soccer, croquet, and birthday party reservations through the City of Coronado, a quieter alternative to the eight-acre event calendar at Spreckels Park on Orange Avenue. Universally accessible play equipment includes a ramped composite climbing structure, belt and bucket swings, an in-ground spinner, and an ADA-designated parking space relocated to the level Pomona Avenue curb.
