STEAM Ahead Foundation in Bonita delivers science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics programming to underserved K-12 students across the San Diego South Bay region from its Via Hacienda headquarters. The foundation's reach spans five public-education school districts and more than 83,000 students, with robotics and competition curricula feeding into the same STEM talent pipeline that supports campuses throughout the area, Bonita Vista High School among them. Since 2016, program offerings have included VEX Robotics design and competition coaching, FIRST LEGO League team sponsorship, and Science Olympiad preparation — targeting a student population where roughly 65 percent qualify for free or reduced-price meals and approximately 40 percent are English Learners. Cross-border partnerships extend to CECYTE School in Bahia de Los Angeles, Baja California, where volunteers deliver robotics workshops and STEM mentorship to rural students. The foundation supplements competition coaching with after-school tutoring and summer academies, drawing on resource networks that include the STEM reference collections housed at Learning Resource Center and Library on the Southwestern College campus. Competition teams assemble custom-fabricated aluminum-and-polycarbonate VEX robots using CAD-designed gear trains and pneumatic actuators, iterating through prototyping cycles that mirror industry-standard mechanical-engineering workflows.
