The Dea Hurston New Village Arts Center in Carlsbad Village is a performing-arts facility at 2787 State Street named after the first Black woman to have her name atop a United States arts center in more than 50 years. The building — a renovated former Bauer Lumber structure granted by the City of Carlsbad — reopened in January 2023 after a comprehensive renovation and sits on the same State Street cultural block as Green Dragon Tavern & Museum. The center houses the Conrad Prebys Theatre, a 100-seat intimate performance space with a stage renamed The Ray Charles Stage in 2024 following a gift from the Ray Charles Foundation. The White Family Next Stage, a smaller second performance room opened in 2023, hosts comedy, opera, spoken-word, and salsa programming that draws audiences from the Village's walkable retail and dining circuit centered on State Street Farmers Market. The Sahm Family Foundation Arts Education Center within the building anchors outreach programs including Teatro Pueblo Nuevo for bilingual communities, Mainstage Players for adults with neurodiversity, and Mindful Theatre for seniors.
