About

Calavera Park in Carlsbad's northeast quadrant spans 21 acres on Glasgow Drive near the intersection of Carlsbad Village Drive and College Boulevard, anchoring a recreation complex that includes an 18,000-square-foot community center with a wood-floor gymnasium, meeting rooms, and a full cooking kitchen. Trail access at the park's eastern edge connects directly to the volcanic terrain and ridgeline routes of Lake Calavera Hiking Trail, extending the park's footprint into 110 acres of preserved wildland around an extinct volcanic cone. Three lighted baseball and softball fields, a full-court and two half-court basketball courts, two tennis courts with windscreens, and a community garden occupy the flat acreage surrounding the center. The park hosts segments of the city's TGIF Concerts in the Parks summer series, drawing audiences to the covered picnic pavilions wired with electricity and barbecue stations. Outdoor fitness machines installed along the perimeter pathway supplement the gymnasium programming and complement the lap swim schedule at Monroe Street Pool, another City of Carlsbad recreation facility two miles west. A recently completed one-acre expansion added a second playground, additional ADA-compliant pathways, and a shaded sand-lot play zone designed for children under five.
