Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation in Carlsbad operates the 3,800-square-foot Discovery Campus on Cannon Road, a hands-on environmental education center overlooking the 400-acre Agua Hedionda Lagoon. Formed as a 501(c)(3) in 1990 (EIN 33-0411888), the foundation joins Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation as one of two independent lagoon conservation organizations anchoring Carlsbad's coastal wetland corridor. The campus houses Raptor Ridge — home to resident owls, falcons, and a hawk — alongside a marine touch tank, native-plant gardens featuring over 750 drought-tolerant species, and an archaeological dig exhibit exploring the lagoon's Luiseño heritage. An 8.9-kilowatt rooftop and parking-lot solar array supplies roughly 45 percent of the campus's electricity, and a rainwater collection system from the executive office roof irrigates the surrounding native garden. Less than a mile from LEGOLAND® California Resort, the campus doubles as a 200-guest event venue with a full kitchen, indoor and outdoor rental spaces, and lagoon-overlook terraces near the Carlsbad Lagoon. Foundation volunteers maintain 3.5 miles of lagoon-perimeter trail — including Bayshore Drive, Cove, Hubbs, Kelly School, and Discovery Campus segments — connecting birders and hikers to one of Southern California's last remaining coastal estuaries.
