North County Academy in Carlsbad is a K–12 special education campus operated by the North Coastal Consortium for Special Education SELPA in affiliation with the San Diego County Office of Education. Fourteen North San Diego County member districts—including Carlsbad Unified, Encinitas Union Elementary, and San Dieguito Union High—fund the program, which is supported by organizations such as the Carlsbad Educational Foundation. Every student at NCA receives an Individualized Education Program that integrates core academic instruction with Educationally Related Mental Health Services, including individual and group counseling. The four-pronged model addresses academics, ERMHS, behavior intervention, and transition planning, and families seeking supplemental literacy support often work with specialists such as Reading Without Limits & Dyslexia Buster for Orton-Gillingham–based reading remediation. A dedicated elementary wing opened on the Magnolia Avenue campus after construction funded jointly by SDCOE and NCCSE member districts replaced the previous portable-classroom configuration. The therapeutic classroom model maintains low student-to-staff ratios to support reintegration into comprehensive, less-restrictive district settings as each student's IEP goals are met.
