Prima Materia Art Institute

Music & Art Lessons

About

Founded in 2011 on the proprietary Losina Method, Prima Materia Art Institute runs Point Loma San Diego's adult art-certification and college-portfolio programs from 3350 Sports Arena Boulevard near Pechanga Arena. The College Art Portfolio Program has sent graduates to schools including UAL and Gnomon School of Visual Effects with 180-hour studio sequences and portfolio-deadline coaching that runs parallel to the standardized-test, Common App, and UC-application work handled separately by College Smart Advising on the non-portfolio side of the admissions funnel. The 180-hour Professional Artist certification produces a gallery-ready body of work, the Art Teacher certification prepares working artists to open their own studios, and the "Learn to Paint in 1 Day" workshop compresses foundation drawing skills into a single six-hour session intended as entry-level teaching credential. Curriculum runs on the mother-and-daughter team's R-brain methodology, an extension of Betty Edwards' "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" framework, with Professional Artist certification graduates frequently staging debut solo shows at NTC-adjacent M Fischbeck Studio Gallery. The institute shifted to a fully online model through the pandemic when 90-minute live video lessons replaced brick-and-mortar instruction at the Sports Arena Boulevard address, with students from Brazil, members of international cohorts, and working adults across the Midway District San Diego corridor joining year-round-enrollment certification tracks without geographic constraint.
