About

Stretching 1.2 miles along a man-made isthmus in Point Loma, Shelter Island San Diego sits on San Diego Bay dredge material raised 21 feet above high tide across two Port of San Diego dredging projects completed between 1946 and 1960. Seven public artworks line the island's bayside promenade, including the Japanese Friendship Bell housed in a bronze pagoda structure, a 1958 gift from Yokohama marking San Diego's sister-city relationship. The Tunaman's Memorial sculpture by Franco Vianello commemorates the tuna-fishing families who built the local industry; Pacific Portal marks the bay-meets-ocean transition in concrete wave forms; and Pacific Rim Park's Pearl of the Pacific fountain anchors the southwestern tip. The island operates under a 1950s-era Polynesian-theme overlay zone, and all hotel, marina, and restaurant buildings must align to that aesthetic, visible in tiki torches, palm-lined walkways, and the remaining mai-tai-era lounge bars. Waterfront lodging ranges from superyacht mooring at the major marinas to full-service resort stays at The Bay Club Hotel & Marina, Humphreys Half Moon Inn, and Kona Kai Resort, each with private marina access to San Diego Bay. The annual YachtFest superyacht showcase each September, the Parade of Lights December holiday boat procession, and Humphreys Concerts by the Bay summer music series together position the island as San Diego's highest-density waterfront event venue outside downtown.
