About

Repin Academy-trained and chairing the LAAFA fine arts department, Okun Art School's Point Loma studio operates from 2690 Historic Decatur Road at Liberty Station Barracks 15. Curriculum runs the European atelier format of cast drawing, figure drawing, and long-pose oil painting from live models, producing classical-realism work stylistically aligned with the juried-watercolor canon exhibited at the San Diego Watercolor Society. The founder was born in Siberia in 1980, immigrated to San Diego in 1993, trained at Watts Atelier for two and a half years, and returned to Russia in 2003 to study the Russian academic-realist museums and methods before building this atelier practice. Weekend life-drawing sessions bring rotating live models in for Saturday and Sunday long-pose work across skill levels, with participant output occasionally making its way onto the Martha Pace Swift Gallery exhibition walls in the NTC Arts District. The Barracks 15 studio anchors its Liberty Station footprint on a traditional European methodology of cast-to-life progression, value-first tonal studies, classical palette limitations, and indirect painting across underpainting-to-finish layers, an unusually strict curriculum among Point Loma San Diego studio schools that more typically blend recreation and basic technique.
