McMillin

General Contractor

About

Founded in 1960, McMillin in Point Loma's Liberty Station serves as the real estate development and home-building arm of the Corky McMillin Companies, the master developer that converted the former 361-acre Naval Training Center into the mixed-use community now anchoring the neighborhood. The firm's Liberty Station footprint includes 350 single-family and multi-family residences, seven Class A office buildings totaling 380,000 square feet, and 125 acres of public open space—infrastructure built alongside general contractors such as Nielsen Construction during phased site delivery. Across all markets, McMillin has developed 16 mixed-use master-planned communities and built nearly 30,000 residences, including 2,000 military housing units on seven Department of Defense bases. The development process spans land acquisition, entitlement, infrastructure engineering—roads, storm drains, utilities—and vertical construction through certificate of occupancy, keeping every phase under one organizational umbrella. Landscape architecture and site amenities within Liberty Station required coordination with design-build firms like Deep Rooted Design to integrate native plantings, hardscape plazas, and pedestrian promenades around the historic barracks buildings. The most complex deliverable remains the NTC redevelopment itself—a base-reuse project requiring Navy environmental remediation, historic-preservation compliance for 26 contributing structures, and concurrent civilian home sales on a site bisected by active utility corridors.
