About

Saved from demolition in 1989, Bookstar in Point Loma operates under the Barnes & Noble banner inside the historic Loma Theatre at 3150 Rosecrans Place, retaining the 1945 Streamline Moderne shell, neon signage, and art-deco interior ceiling. The former snack bar now serves as the checkout counter, and the original screen wall remains intact behind the shelving — an adaptive reuse that shares the peninsula's literary landscape with independents such as Seabreeze Nautical Books on Scott Street. Bookstar carries the full Barnes & Noble general-interest catalog plus a curated local-interest section highlighting San Diego history, coastal ecology, and California travel. The theater's maritime and Point Loma heritage connect it to the same cultural corridor that includes the Nautical History Gallery & Museum further down the peninsula. The most distinctive feature remains architect S. Charles Lee's hand-painted mural ceiling, visible from every aisle, making it one of the only bookstores in the country housed inside an intact single-screen movie palace.
