About

Retired IFBB Professional Bodybuilder and three-time Ms. Olympia contender Sandra Blackie brings more than 35 years of training experience to Freedom of Fitness, a personal training and wellness center at 2949 Garnet Ave in the 92109. Originally from Montreal, Canada, Blackie won the Canadian National Bodybuilding Championship in 1986 and competed internationally before retiring from professional competition in 1996 and settling in San Diego. She holds a B.A. in Recreation & Leisure Studies from Concordia University, along with certifications from the National Academy of Sports Medicine, the American Council on Exercise, the National Association of Sports Nutrition, and the Aerobic & Fitness Association of America. Blackie also serves as the wellness expert on the radio program Talk with Brett, airing Saturdays at 4 p.m. on 96.1 FM North County and 1170 AM San Diego, and serious lifters working out of the same building will find The Training Center upstairs at 2949 Garnet. Programs span introductory fitness, elite athlete preparation, virtual personal training, outdoor group fitness, and personalized nutrition counseling, with every client receiving a Health & Wellness Manual, a Lean For Life cookbook, and an exercise journal — all authored by Blackie herself. Client Sue Ross credited Sandra with coaching her back to the bodybuilding stage after a 25-year break, resulting in a second-place competition finish. Thai food lovers refueling after a session can walk to Lanna Thai Cuisine on nearby Garnet for a high-protein post-workout meal. Freedom of Fitness operates Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., with appointments recommended. The space is wheelchair accessible with adapted parking and restrooms, and accepts credit and debit cards.
