In continuous operation since 1956 at 950 Turquoise St, San Diego, CA 92109, Turquoise Animal Hospital is one of the few Pacific Beach veterinary practices holding a 50-year membership with the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). Dr. Atkinson, who took over in 2003 following years of mixed-animal practice in Oceanside and a 1982 degree from Texas A&M Veterinary School, built a team that treats reptiles, birds, chinchillas, tortoises, and other exotic animals alongside dogs and cats. For routine supplies between visits, Petco on Garnet Avenue is just blocks away. Bilingual veterinarian Dr. Guayasamin — known to clients as Dr. G — graduated from Western University Veterinary School in Pomona in 2008 and completed a San Diego internship spanning emergency medicine, internal medicine, surgery, and exotic animal care. The hospital's treatment menu extends to Companion Laser Therapy, stem cell treatment, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections, acupuncture, endoscopy, ultrasound, and orthopedic surgeries, plus in-house boarding and full grooming services. Veterinary technician Yanira has been with the practice for eight years, and registered veterinary technician Karen — a Pima Medical Institute graduate who passed her VTNE in 2025 — rounds out a staff raised largely in the San Diego area. Free puppy training classes are open to any client whose pet is current on vaccines, a benefit rarely offered at a full-service hospital. Clients picking up post-visit prescriptions can stop at CVS Pharmacy on Mission Boulevard, less than a mile from the clinic. The hospital is open Monday through Friday 8:30 AM to 5 PM and Saturday 8 AM to 4 PM, with appointments required.
