Founded in 1927 by Thomas Scripps and Austen Brown, Mission Bay Yacht Club is a private, member-owned sailing club at 1215 El Carmel Pl in Pacific Beach, 92109. The club traces its origin to 1925, when Brown purchased a dilapidated 12-foot Flapper catboat for $50 and restored it with Scripps on the shallow, undeveloped waters of Mission Bay. Today MBYC holds more than 200 Google reviews at a 4.7-star rating and serves as home port for multiple one-design racing fleets, including Snipe, Lightning, Lido 14, and Laser classes. The club hosted the Snipe World Championships in 1997, and its Snipe fleet captured the Commodore Hub E. Isaacks Trophy in 1969, 1971, and 1981. Notable alumni include Olympic bronze medalist Caleb Paine, who began sailing in the learn-to-sail program at age seven, and members often grab a casual post-race meal at Bare Back Grill on Grand Avenue. Each year the commodore sails "Scanties," the club's original Flapper donated by Scripps around 1968, in the Asher Pier Race during Opening Day festivities, a tradition that has continued for decades. Thursday Night Thing, the club's long-running weekly social gathering, draws members to the waterfront bar for drinks and camaraderie after informal twilight racing. The dining room is open Friday and Saturday evenings from 5:30 to 8 p.m., and the Southern California Yachting Association lists MBYC as a member club since 1964.
