About

Founded in 1892 by Zulette Lamb and sisters Lena, Agnes, and Caroline Polhamus, ZLAC Rowing Club is a women's rowing organization at 1111 Pacific Beach Dr in Pacific Beach, 92109 — and the oldest women's rowing club in continuous operation in the world. The four founders used the initials of their first names to create the ZLAC acronym while rowing together on San Diego Bay as teenagers. In 1932, the club relocated to its current Mission Bay location and into a redwood clubhouse designed by architect Lilian Rice, a former ZLAC president whose work earned an honor award from the San Diego chapter of the American Institute of Architects in 1933. The property was landscaped by horticulturist Kate Sessions, widely known as the Mother of Balboa Park. Rowers who work up an appetite on Mission Bay often refuel at JRDN Restaurant, which overlooks the same waterfront just a short drive south. ZLAC helped co-found the San Diego Crew Classic in 1973 through the vision of member Patty Wyatt of Crew VIII, and the club has remained integral to the regatta ever since. Membership is by invitation and organized into numbered crews loosely based on age group, from the oldest members in Crew VIII to Juniors ages thirteen to seventeen. The fleet currently includes twenty-five to thirty boats — eight-person, four-person, two-person, and single shells. Weekend outings along the Mission Bay shoreline pair well with a casual stop at Draft South Mission, located just south of the club. Google reviewers regularly highlight the stunning beachfront property and the craftsman-style lodge as a standout wedding and event venue. ZLAC holds a 4.8-star Google rating across nearly sixty reviews.
