About

Along the eastern shore of Mission Bay at 1740 E Mission Bay Dr. in the 92109, Tecolote Shores is a sprawling bayfront park that underwent a $8.38 million renovation completed in two phases between 2022 and 2023. The City of San Diego and landscape architecture firm Schmidt Design Group reimagined the space into two connected play areas—Tecolote Shores North and Tecolote Shores South—linked by an ADA-compliant pathway with security lighting. The North playground is themed around the area’s kite-flying culture, with kite-inspired shade structures casting playful shadows over picnic areas, and features an adult fitness course and a designated slackline area with nine steel posts. The South playground stretches across nearly two acres and draws design inspiration from the coves and inlets of Tecolote Creek, with accessible play islands, a zipline, a merry-go-round, a sound garden, and a sand play area shaded by hypar sails. Fire rings, barbecue grills, and gender-neutral restrooms with rinse-off showers round out the amenities. The twelve-mile Mission Bay Bike Path runs directly through the park, making it a convenient starting point for a ride around the bay. Cyclists and joggers fueling up before a lap can stop at Draft South Mission for a quick bite along Mission Blvd. Families spending a full day at the park are a short drive from O’Reilly Auto Parts on Mission Bay Dr. for any car essentials before heading home.
