Run by the City of San Diego’s Parks and Recreation Department, Pacific Beach Park is a public recreation center and neighborhood park at 1405 Diamond St in the 92109. The facility packs a serious amount of athletic infrastructure into a single city block: two lighted outdoor basketball courts, two lighted tennis courts, a multi-purpose athletic field, indoor gymnasiums for basketball and volleyball, a weight room, a game room, and three meeting rooms with a kitchen. Pickleball has become one of the center’s most popular draws, with dedicated open-play hours attracting regulars from across the beach communities. The rec center hosts youth sports leagues, seasonal events like the annual Spring Egg Hunt, and free drop-in improv comedy classes through the Exuberant Theatre Company. Summer Movies in the Park screenings bring families out to the athletic field after dark. After a pickup game, players often refuel at Filippis Pizza Grotto Pacific Beach, a neighborhood staple on Garnet Ave. A cold pint is waiting just a few blocks away at SD TapRoom on Garnet. A sand tot lot and playground with slides and swings give younger children a space of their own, and the Pacific Beach community council holds meetings here on the third Tuesday of each month.
