About

Founded in 2019 by award-winning author Steve Slocum, Salaam USA is a nonprofit organization at 4615 Pico St APT 9 in San Diego, CA 92109, dedicated to training and activating allies for social justice advocacy. Slocum's book, Why Do They Hate Us? Making Peace with the Muslim World, laid the groundwork for the organization's early mission of bridging divides between Muslim and non-Muslim communities. After the murder of George Floyd in 2020, Salaam broadened its scope to address systemic racism through a three-step framework: critical awareness, meaningful connection, and effective solidarity. The Critical Awareness program features Kumeyaay, Latinx, and Black educators who share lived experiences and historical context—sessions are held at venues including San Diego College of Continuing Education. Deirdre Encarnacion, Salaam's Director of Education, brings degrees in Anthropology and Biology from San Diego State University along with a Certificate of Specialization in Kumeyaay Studies from Kumeyaay Community College. Community members who value education-centered advocacy can also explore programming at the Pacific Beach Taylor Branch Library, which hosts its own public events and discussions. Salaam's Real Friends, Real Community program creates intentionally diverse circles where participants share personal stories across racial and cultural lines, and many past attendees describe the experience as transformative. The nonprofit is non-religious and non-partisan, welcoming anyone committed to dismantling systems of inequity. Residents looking to support additional local organizations working on social challenges can learn about Center For Community Solutions on nearby Mission Bay Drive.
