Established in 1992 by internationally recognized ballet artists Steven and Elizabeth Wistrich, City Ballet School operates from its studio at 941 Garnet Ave #2729 in Pacific Beach, 92109, with the entrance on the south alley. The school has grown into San Diego's premier ballet training program, drawing students from across the county for classes that blend multiple classical styles into a versatile, well-rounded curriculum. Parents dropping off young dancers often grab a morning latte at Crown Point Coffee in the Crown Point neighborhood while waiting for class to end. Instructors are hand-picked exclusively from professional ballet backgrounds, and every student is physically evaluated before placement to prevent injuries while building flexibility, strength, and stamina at the appropriate pace. Elizabeth Wistrich trained at the Boston Conservatory of Music, performed with the Boston Ballet and at the Metropolitan Opera House, and danced internationally at England's Royal Opera House, the Netherlands Dance Theatre, and the Stuttgart Ballet. She received a Tommy Award for choreography and was honored with the San Diego Business Journal's Women Who Mean Business award in 2016. The school offers year-round open classes for adults, summer intensives for children, and a three-week adult intensive that culminates in a live performance. Families nurturing a love of the arts in their children can browse titles at Pennywise Books on Cass St to bring the storytelling side of ballet home. School Principal Natalie Test oversees daily operations alongside a faculty that includes Ariana Gonzalez, Geoff Gonzalez, and Robert Mack.
