Inside the gymnasium at Mission Bay High School, 2475 Grand Ave in the 92109, a church plant called Aloha Church gathers every Sunday at 10 a.m. Founding Pastor Dru Teves launched the congregation in September 2018 with a team of young adults and a vision shaped by his studies in pastoral counseling and Christian education at Life Pacific College. The church runs a community outreach initiative called Random Acts of Aloha, which has organized graffiti cleanups and supported survivors of human trafficking across the San Diego area. Every week after the service, the congregation shares a communal lunch on the grass lawn outside the school—a tradition the church considers central to building genuine relationships. Bare Back Grill on Grand Ave is another gathering spot for members who continue the conversation over a meal. Aloha Church also maintains a substance recovery ministry for anyone working through addiction challenges and publishes its weekly sermons as a podcast on Spotify and Apple Podcasts. Those exploring the Grand Ave corridor after the service will find a variety of dining options, including PB Sushi a short walk west. The church identifies as LGBTQ+ friendly and welcomes visitors with coffee, pastries, and a welcome gift at the info booth.
