Founded by Randy Martin—who also owns The Tipsy Crow downtown—Sandbox Pizza is a sports bar and pizza restaurant at 1466 Garnet Ave in the 92109 that originally opened on Grand Avenue before relocating in June 2021 to a larger space, taking over the former PB Cantina location. The bar draws Boston transplants and SoCal locals alike with its New England sports allegiance, broadcasting Patriots, Red Sox, Celtics, and Bruins games across more than 28 big screens. In 2025, the Best Pizza & Brew team—led by original founders John Freis, Charlie Muirhead, Kelly Bowie, and Angela Montion, alongside current operators Joey Freis and Mitchell Millar—acquired the business while keeping the Sandbox name and its laid-back beachside identity intact. The kitchen turns out build-your-own and specialty pizzas alongside wings with rotating monthly flavors, shareable starters, and sub sandwiches served on Amoroso rolls. Friday and Saturday nights shift into live entertainment mode with local bands and house music starting at 9 PM, powered by a recently upgraded sound system. Fellow game-day enthusiasts can catch more of the action over at Sandbar Sports Grill, another Garnet Ave staple with wall-to-wall screens. Happy hour runs Monday through Friday from noon to 5 PM with drink specials, and the bar stocks a deep rotation of craft drafts and signature fishbowl cocktails built for sharing. The restaurant also runs a community fundraising program that returns 35 percent of supporter sales to local schools and nonprofit organizations.
