Globally inspired sweet and savory pies wrapped in a signature all-butter crust are the foundation of Pop Pie Co. Pacific Beach, a restaurant at 829 Garnet Ave, 92109. Co-founders Steven Torres and Executive Chef Gan Suebsarakham launched the original Pop Pie Co. in University Heights in 2016, and the Pacific Beach outpost opened in early 2023 as part of their growing Sweet & Savory Collective hospitality group. Suebsarakham, a Thai chef from Khon Kaen who earned an MBA from National University and studied culinary arts at Grossmont College, oversees a rotating menu of 5-inch handheld pies that draw from Australian, European, and Asian culinary traditions. The classic chicken pie with garden vegetables, pearl onions, and creamy herb sauce is the best-seller, while the pork green chile pie and The Boss breakfast pie with Applewood smoked bacon and hash browns attract morning crowds. Torres, originally from Calexico in the Imperial Valley, holds degrees in accounting and business administration from Central Washington University and transitioned from finance into restaurant ownership. Fresh seafood fans walking Garnet Ave can also stop by The Fishery, a market and restaurant offering sustainable catches. The shop operates a multi-roaster coffee program, meaning the beans change regularly to keep the coffee experience fresh. Pop Pie Co. identifies as Asian-owned, Latino-owned, and LGBTQ+ owned, and the Pacific Beach location shares its address with Stella Jean's Ice Cream, the sister brand also created by Torres and Suebsarakham. Diners exploring the west end of Garnet can continue to Costa Brava for cocktails and American fare. The Collective now operates six locations across San Diego and Orange County, with a dedicated corporate home base in Mission Valley.
