About

VCA Peninsula Animal Hospital has anchored the corner of Voltaire and Worden since 1967, making the practice the longest-continuously-operating veterinary hospital in the Point Loma-OB corridor and now part of the national VCA network. Most of the current medical team holds Fear Free certification, a specific training framework for low-stress handling of anxious cats and reactive dogs, and owners with behavior work still in progress can coordinate private-lesson or reactive-dog coaching with Animal Behavior College certified trainer Lara Schindler at Happy Dog Happy Owner. Dr. Hans Ewertz (UC Davis 1976) is the senior clinician and Dr. Monica Hambalko (UCSD Biochemistry, University of Missouri DVM 2003) returned to her San Diego hometown to join the practice in 2009; Dr. Shara Brookman and Dr. Austin Eng round out the staff. Services cover physical exams, vaccines, spay and neuter, dental care, soft-tissue surgery, digital radiography, in-house laboratory diagnostics, and myVCA app access for prescription refills, live chat, and appointment booking. Dogs headed into intensive obedience work can also be placed in the Happy Dog Happy Owner 4, 7, or 14-session board-and-train program at Happy Dog Happy Owner's Cabrillo Pet Care Center location. First-time clients receive a complimentary exam. The most complex caseload is multi-doctor senior-pet management — chronic disease staging, surgical intervention, dental-disease control, and coordinated handoff to the mobile end-of-life vets who serve OB when the time comes.
