About

Operated by a former attorney who retrained as a master potter, Claytime Ceramics has run a multimedia art studio at 1863 Bacon St—one block from the Ocean Beach shoreline—for more than twenty years. The 50-seat studio rotates through potter’s-wheel sessions, ceramic painting, hand-building, mosaic assembly, henna tattooing, canvas painting, and tie-dye, adding depth to an OB arts corridor that also includes The Artist Outpost’s pottery and mixed-media program on Voltaire St. Seasonal kids’ camps for ages six and up split the day between indoor projects—fired ceramics, acrylic painting on wood, tie-dye shirts—and exploratory walks to the Sunset Cliffs tide pools. Claytime designs and produces custom school tile-mural installations for local campuses including Kate Sessions, Silvergate, Bay Park, and Doyle elementary schools, handling design, firing, and on-site mounting as a single contractor. Beyond drop-in sessions, adult six-week wheel-throwing series take beginners from centering clay through trimming, glazing, and kiln-firing a finished portfolio of functional ceramics—the kind of studio progression that feeds into OB’s broader exhibition culture, including BE Studios’ community gallery space. The most technically demanding commissions involve custom slab-built mosaic installations for residential and commercial clients, where the studio manages tile cutting, pattern layout, grouting, and permanent mounting.
