About

Founded in 2006 as the first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy in Ocean Beach, this Abbott Street gym is led by a Rodrigo Medeiros black belt who trained under Carlson Gracie lineage since 1997 and received his black belt in 2013. The head coach also runs the Point Loma High School varsity wrestling program, a takedown-and-scramble lineage that shows up in the academy's strong emphasis on positional wrestling, with strength and conditioning programming that complements the periodization model at Catalyst Performance Center. A dedicated Women's Fundamentals class taught by a brown belt on staff runs on a smaller-group format for students who want a lower-intensity introduction before stepping into the full co-ed class. Kids classes are structured by age band with progression tracked through the IBJJF kids belt system, and recovery from the cumulative toll of gi training is often handled through spinal and joint care at Miller's Blueprint Chiropractic around the corner on Santa Monica. Shared rolling sessions for active students cap off the weekly rotation, with drilling-heavy fundamentals blocks every class taking beginners from day-one basics through blue-belt-level guard passing and submission chains. The most involved program is the adult competition track: integrated gi and no-gi curriculum, positional sparring cycles, wrestling takedown drills drawn from the head coach's high school program, and tournament prep blocks timed to IBJJF local and US Grappling circuits.
