Fully vegan and gluten-free across the entire menu, Phatties Bake Shop has operated on Voltaire St since 2021 and was featured by the San Diego Union-Tribune in 2023 for its bake program. Cakes, donuts, cookies, pop tarts, cobblers, lava muffins, and tres leches all run vegan and gluten-free, putting the shop in a different dietary category than the conventional scratch baking at Azucar on the OB pastry corridor. The espresso bar pulls Mr. Espresso organic, non-acidic, oak-wood-roasted Tuscan blend beans for lattes, mochas, matcha drinks, and the house Vietnamese coffee, all available with oat or coconut milk. The savory side of the menu—Just Egg breakfast bagels, vegan-cheese frittatas, hashbrown rings, and a gravy-and-chorizo-crumble pizza by the slice—gives the shop a hot-food anchor distinct from the cafe-and-coffee format at Little Lion Cafe in the neighborhood. Seating is sidewalk-only outside the small pink storefront, with the bulk of the operation oriented toward online pre-orders for pickup or delivery. Multi-tier custom celebration cakes—six-inch three-layer builds in cookie dough, funfetti, lemon-raspberry, s'mores, fruity-pebble, and full-sheet tres leches feeding up to fifty—are scheduled in advance through the online system and represent the highest-value work the kitchen books.
