About

North Park Sign at the intersection of University Ave and 30th St is a neon landmark originally erected in 1935 by the North Park Business Club and re-installed as a full-scale replica in 1993. The current sign was designed by Wieber Nelson Design and constructed by California Neon on a decorative tile pedestal in the University Avenue median, with the surrounding commercial district managed by North Park Main Street. Its original iteration was funded through a $400 campaign led by the women’s auxiliary of the North Park Business Club to welcome visitors during the 1935 California Pacific International Exposition in Balboa Park. The sign now anchors walking tours and self-guided art crawls through North Park, with neighborhood tourism supported by organizations like Explore North Park. The sign’s 1993 reconstruction required matching the original 1935 neon tube-bending specifications to a new steel armature rated for permanent median installation above a four-lane urban intersection.
