North Park’s women-owned Vietnamese kitchen since 2018, Shank & Bône at 2930 University Ave builds its signature pho using quadruple the standard bone ratio for a deeper, more concentrated broth. A 15-tap craft beer program pours both San Diego and Vietnamese labels, and The Seventh House Speakeasy down the block adds a second option for after-dinner cocktails. A Shepard Fairey mural anchors the dining room, and the menu extends beyond pho to include bone marrow rubbed with pho spices, bánh xèo tacos in coconut-turmeric batter, and fish sauce chicken wings. Those finishing dinner can walk to Figaro Dessert Cafe at 3011 University Ave for a late-night pastry course. The kitchen’s most involved plate is the roasted bone marrow — split femur bones coated in a house pho-spice rub, broiled, and served with herb garnish and toasted bread for tableside assembly.
