San Diego Fire Station 18 has served Normal Heights and Kensington from Felton Street since 1927, when the original station was built for $10,800 in the 92116 grid. The current two-story building at 4676 Felton Street opened in March 1989 and houses Engine 18, Medic 18, and a State Office of Emergency Services all-hazard fire engine that deploys on wildfire strike teams statewide. Fire prevention education and safety inspections reach congregations and community gathering spaces throughout the district, including large-capacity worship facilities such as Grace Church San Diego on Adams Avenue. Engine 18's response district covers 2.98 square miles of primarily residential territory across Normal Heights and Kensington, with both Interstate 8 and Interstate 15 running through the district and generating highway-accident and rescue calls. The station sits one block off Adams Avenue and the Adams Avenue Antique District, and serves as the authoritative voice for the Normal Heights Fire Council. Open-space fire risk management extends to the canyon edges and parkland that border the residential grid, including the vegetated slopes around Ward Canyon Park where brush accumulation triggers inspection cycles. Crews maintain a traditional fire pole connecting the upstairs sleeping quarters to the apparatus floor, where a crew-painted mural covers the engine bay wall.
